“Social Network” Team Doing “50 Shades”
The producers of “The Social Network” are producing the film adaption of the best-selling erotic trilogy “Fifty Shades of Grey.” Universal Pictures and Focus Features said in a joint statement Monday that Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti will reteam for the adaptation of the novels by E. L. James. What do I think about this news? On the one hand, the books are so turgid that any adaptation has to be an improvement. On the other hand, there’s no point to making them movies if you are no going to be true to their erotic nature. Which means lots of heavy breathing but not much full-frontal fornication. Which results in soft-core porn, the most useless genre known to humankind. What’s the point of being naughty if you’re not going to go all the way?
