Your Weekend: LemonWade Recommends

Movies: “The Hobbit” is unavoidable, though the older I get the more impossibly twee I find Bilbo. Television: PBS gives us “Magical Mystery Tour Revealed,” about the making of The Beatles’ 1967 album. The usual Sunday-night pile-up has been relieved for me by reality-show junk. Still, I wouldn’t miss this weekend’s “Homeland” finale for the world. Music: Bruno Mars’ new CD, “Unorthodox Jukebox,” is one of the rare items that charts both on Amazon (which skews old, cuz only old people pay full price for a CD) and on iTunes, which skews younger. Books: I’m catching up with Katherine Boo’s “Behind the Beautiful Forevers,” about a poor part of Mumbai, because the book is making a lot of year-end Ten Best lists. Sports: In the NFL’s final weeks, the Patriots look strong. I won’t mind if they win the Super Bowl this year: I feel sorry for all their losses to the Giants, who won’t be making the title game in 2013. Finally: If Congress and the President can’t meet deadlines, why should you? Give New Year’s gifts instead of Christmas presents this year.
