Kircher Discovered The “Cat Piano”

My favorite bit from this review of a new biography of the 17th-century German polymath Kircher is his invention of a “cat piano”. It was played by pricking the tails of seven cats with differently pitched cries. What would happen if we pricked the tails of an entire viola section: would the sounds be as unpleasant?
