Nuns Return To Opera In “Doubt”

As far as I’m concerned, the only nunnnies who belong in opera come from “Suor Angelica” and “Dialogues of the Carmelites” — and it’s no coincidence that my favorite singing actress, Teresa Stratas, gave electric performances in both of them. But playwright John Patrick Shanley (pictured) obviously doesn’t agree with me. Otherwise, why would he have written the libretto for an opera version of “Doubt,” premiering on Jan. 26 at the Minnesota Opera? You remember “Doubt”: hit play starring Cherry Jones and then the acclaimed movie in which Viola Davis wiped Meryl Streep off the screen and then Meryl retaliated by snatching the Oscar from Viola three years later.
