Pope Portraits Throughout The Ages

With the papacy front and center this week, I started thinking about some of the Popes in the centuries since one last resigned. And that got me to thinking about their role as art patrons. One of the greatest was Innocent X, whose portrait, shown here, was indelibly done in 1650 by Velazquez. It was reinterpreted in the twentieth century, in screaming style, by Francis Bacon.
