Lauryn Hill Releases New Track

First off, Reuters reports Lauryn Hill’s remaining $900,000 in tax debt has been settled, hours before her Monday court date. (She was sentenced to jail.) Secondly, here is “Neurotic Society (Compulsory Mix),” one of Hill’s only studio releases in the fifteen years since “Miseducation” hit. (Her last was 2010’s “Repercussions.”) The title’s parenthetical may or may not have something to do with the fact that Hill was, in her words, “‘required’ to release immediately, by virtue of the impending legal deadline. I love being able to reach people directly, but in an ideal scenario, I would not have to rush the release of new music … but the message is still there. In light of Wednesday’s tragic loss (of former label mate Chris Kelly), I am even more pressed to YELL this to a multitude that may not understand the cost of allowing today’s unhealthy paradigms to remain unchecked!” Vulture comments: “The ferocious, hookless track sounds like it’s got three songs worth of lyrics packed in, so it’s clear Hill still has plenty to say.”
