Will Mandela Death Boost Idris’s Chances?
The deathwatch over Nelson Mandela is getting pretty tasteless, as the New York Times notes today. But I can’t help asking again: would a Mandela death boost the chances of Idris Elba to win the Best Actor statue at the Oscars next year? Elba plays Nelson Mandela in “Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom.†Consider this: Ray Charles died in June, 2004, and Jamie Foxx went on to win the Oscar the following March for “Ray.” If Mandela dies in June, 2013, will Oscar history recur?
