Like Ethel Merman and Gertrude Lawrence, Mary Martin was one of those performers who needed to be seen live to be fully appreciated. I’m sorry I’m too young to have seen any of them onstage. I’d never seen Martin do “Dolly!” until a LW reader sent me the above clip.
