Not Every Movie Cries Out To Be A Musical

I love the French movie “Amelie,” I love the playwright Craig Lucas, I love Dan Messé (co-founder of Brooklyn indie group Hem). But when I heard the news that these men were turning that movie into a stage show, all I kept thinking was: Why does every classic movie have to be turned into a musical? First it was “Diner,” then “Tootsie,” now “Amelie.” As Quentin Crisp used to say: why don’t they re-package the bad movies instead of the good ones?
