Labor Day Weekend: A Selective Guide

Movies: One of the slowest weekends of the year, as moviedom gets ready for the flood of fall releases: best of the lot may be Brian De Palma’s “Passion.” Television: A three-day weekend may be the ideal opportunity to binge-watch the summer’s most enjoyable new series: “Orange Is the New Black.” On Labor Day, PBS repeats its excellent documentary about America’s National Parks. Music: Mackelmore and Ryan Lewis’s “The Heist” got a nice bump from the VMAs. Books: I’ve been re-reading a huge batch of books to celebrate the end of summer: Yourcenar’s “Memoirs of Hadrian” and John Le Carre’s “Tinker, Tailor” chief among them. Sports: College football kicks off strong this weekend, but I’m waiting for next week’s NFL start. Finally: Little kids are wonderful and annoying in just about equal measure.
