Anthony Lane On The Lido: Venice Madness

Anthony Lane, who attended the just-completed Venice Film Festival, gets at why I don’t trust the reviews of festival bloggers who attend four or five films a day: ‘No prize, however well-deserved, can recapture the unceasing churn of films, from day to day, and the expectant chatter of festival-goers, never quite sated, who riffle through screenings like little boys, in decades past, collecting baseball cards…Is it possible to watch a movie without actually seeing it, let alone granting oneself the time, or the restful space in one’s head, to think about what it might mean?’
