Some of the selections on this list are predictable: Max Steiner for “Gone with the Wind,” Leonard Bernstein for “On the Waterfront.” I’d forgotten that Bernard Herrmann did “The Ghost and Mrs. Muir,” which I prefer to his work on “Vertigo” (a movie which, unlike a recent critics’ poll, I find decidedly not the greatest picture of all time). My sentimental favorite on the list would have to be Nino Rota‘s score for “8 1/2.” Sublime.
