What’s Next For “12 Years A Slave”?

Winning the audience award at the Toronto International Film Festival, as “12 Years A Slave” (pictured) did this weekend, augurs well for a movie’s Best Picture/Oscar chances: “The King’s Speech” and “Slumdog Millionaire” managed similar feats. But it’s still too early to proclaim this year’s derby incontrovertibly over, as several silly pundits had done. What would really help “12 Years” is to lose its frontrunner status in the next month or two and then to come roaring back in January — the way “The King’s Speech” did against “The Social Network.”
