Your Weekend: A Selective Guide

Movies: “Prisoners,” with Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal, has gotten some nice reviews. But can it compete with “Insidious: Chapter 2“? Television: I’m curious about the Rory Kinnear “Richard II” on PBS on Friday. Meanwhile, “Dexter” ends on Sunday. Neil Patrick Harris, a terrific Tonys host this year, oversees the Emmys on Sunday. Music: “Wise Up Ghost,” the new collaboration between Elvis Costello and The Roots, is worth a listen. Can’t get excited yet about the leaks I’ve heard from the new Drake album. Books: The Top 20 sellers on Amazon’s list right now all look like junk (led by Rush Limbaugh’s doo-doo), so I may re-read something from earlier in the year: “Wave,” Sonali Deraniyagala’s searing memoir about the 2004 Sri Lanka tsunami. Sports: I’m still purring about Seattle’s takedown of the 49ers this week, almost enough to make me a Seahawks fan. Finally: I’m thinking of buying a new iPhone, even though many of my friends have defected to Android.
