French Director Patrice Chereau Is Dead: Here’s My New Yorker Interview With Him

Patrice Chereau, the French director of opera, theater and films such as “Queen Margot” and “Those Who Love Me Can Take the Train,” died Monday in Paris of lung cancer. He was 68. I interviewed Chereau in 1996 for The New Yorker. He was charming. Our conversation, which was slated for 30 minutes, lasted almost two hours. The accompanying photo, with the actor Pascal Greggory, was taken by Richard Avedon.
