Movies: I highly recommend “12 Years A Slave“: intense but worth it. I’m not so keen on “All Is Lost,” though Robert Redford certainly works his ass off in it. Television: Looking over the Great Performances’ 40th-anniversary show on Friday, I thought: What? No Josh Groban? The over-60s will revolt! Meanwhile, “The Good Wife” is going off the rails a bit, isn’t it? Music: Will someone please explain to me why Lorde’s “Pure Heroine” is so popular? God forgive me, but I like the horribly un-PC new Eminem single, “Rap God.” Books: Eleanor Catton’s “The Luminaries” won the Booker Prize, but at 848 pages I’m still inclined to say: life’s too short. Sports: Please wake me when the baseball playoffs are over. Finally: And please wake me again when the Republican crazies go away — I’ll probably be dead first.
