“Saving Mr. Banks”: First Reviews

We’d been told that “Saving Mr. Banks,” starring Tom Hanks as Walt Disney and Emma Thompson as P.L. Travers, who wrote “Mary Poppins,” was so good that it would upend the Oscar race. Reading the first reviews, I don’t expect “Mr. Banks” to bank any gold on Academy Awards night, though Thompson for sure and perhaps Hanks as well will score noms. The Hollywood Reporter says the film is ‘an affecting if somewhat soft-soaped comedy drama, elevated by excellent performances.’
