“Spider-Man” Closing: Mixed Feelings

After a rocky two-year stint on Broadway, the high-profile musical “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark” will close its doors in January. The move is expected to be announced later this week. It was fashionable among my brethren in the media to deride this show for its exorbitant cost, as well its perceived artistic excesses. But I must confess that each time I saw the show (four), I found something to enjoy in its: aspects of Bono and The Edge‘s songs, Julie Taymor’s direction, scenic delights, performances among the hard-working cast. And all the out-of-towners I took to the show also had a pretty good time. Maybe they will make the musical a bigger hit in Vegas, where it is headed in re-tooled form.
