Your Weekend: A Selective Guide

Movies: I don’t need to tell you about the new “Hunger Games” movie, which I’ve seen and recommend. Jennifer Lawrence is truly fierce. I do need to tell you about “Philomena,” which features Judi Dench and the terrific Peter Hermann in a gay role. Television: I’ve consumed all the JFK-assassination programming I can handle. If you haven’t, try this. On Sunday, watch the Kennedy Center give Carol Burnett the Mark Twain Prize. Music: Susan Boyle’s Christmas CD is currently the best-selling holiday album, new or old. Take that, Barbra and Josh! The video for Kanye’s “Bound 2” is so been-there-done-that. Still like the song, though. Books: Ari Shavit’s “My Promised Land” really is just about the best, fairest book about modern-day Israel ever published. Sports: I’ve been watching a little figure skating. I want to get it all out of my system before the Winter Olympics — which I’m boycotting! Finally: If you haven’t donated yet to Philippines typhoon relief, here’s one place to do it.
