Sondheim Gives Meryl A New Song

The upcoming Disney film adaptation of “Into the Woods,” which is currently filming in London, will feature a new song for the character of the Witch, played by Academy Award winner Meryl Streep. (Bernadette Peters’ Witchy singing can be heard in the video.) Streep revealed the news during interviews for the film of Tracy Letts’ “August: Osage County” with Extra TV. “I have a new song that [Stephen] Sondheim wrote for me,” Streep said with a laugh, adding, “He gave me the manuscript of it and wrote, ‘Don’t f*ck it up!'” Rob Marshall (“Chicago,” Disney’s “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides”) directs the film, based on the Tony-winning original musical by James Lapine, who also penned the screenplay, and composer Sondheim, who provides music and lyrics. It will arrive in theatres Dec. 25, 2014.
