Woody Vs. Dylan: Where Is The Truth?

We will never know for certain whether Woody Allen did the things to 7-year-old Dylan Farrow that she says occurred two decades ago. At the time, a thorough investigation was conducted by court appointed independent experts. The experts concluded there was no credible evidence of molestation; that Dylan Farrow had an inability to distinguish between fantasy and reality; and that Dylan Farrow had likely been coached by her mother Mia Farrow. As for yesterday’s Dylan confession in the New York Times, I think it’s fair to say that it was a hit job orchestrated by Dylan’s mother, Mia Farrow, who is a friend of Nicholas Kristof, the Times columnist who aired the charges. Mia Farrow, as many people who know her will attest, is a heroic mother but not always a reliable truth-teller. I have no idea whether this is a case of Like Mother Like Daughter. I certainly think Woody Allen, in some of his behavior over the years, has been a world-class creep. He is also an artist, and actors like working with him. One of them, Cate Blanchett, this year’s Oscar frontrunner for Allen’s “Blue Jasmine,” should certainly not be tarred with the brush that Dylan Farrow has applied to Allen. I’m quite sure that Oscar voters will distinguish between Allen and Blanchett, even as they — and we — empathize with the psychological pain that Dylan Farrow has suffered.
