Tolstoy Seen With His Daughter
I am surprised I had never seen this photograph before: I’m a major Tolstoy freak and have looked at dozens of portraits of him. In this image, the author of “War and Peace” is seen with his daughter Tatyana in a striking composition photographed by his wife Sophia. He was seriously ill at the time and living in Gaspra, a spa town on the coast of the Black Sea. It was 1902: he lived another 8 years.
