Movies: Let The Women Do The Talking

When it comes to the subject of women in film (or, as some call it, chicks in flicks), the Telegraph has an insightful article: ‘New studies from several independent poll companies – including that run by Nate Silver, the statistician who made his name with near-perfect predictions of the 2008 US presidential elections – are further grist for Cate Blanchett’s recent Oscar speech urging people to put more women in movies.’ It turns out that films that pass The Bechdel Test (definition here) for pro-women storytelling – including recent hits such as Frozen, Despicable Me 2, Divergent and The Hunger Games – yield a higher median gross return on their budgets than those that don’t.
