Met Gala: Worst Looks Over The Years

I hate it when people say the annual gala for the Metropolitan Museum’s Costume Institute is the “Oscars of fashion.” They don’t give out awards, people. The designation refers to the red-carpet aspect of the affair, which will be held tonight and which will provide its hostess, Anna Wintour, an even bigger opportunity to preen than usual: the Met has named the Institute after her. The new show, which I have seen, is devoted to the work of couturier Charles James. For a more eloquent assessment of the exhibit than I could provide, check out Judith Thurman’s essay in The New Yorker. And then, for fun, check out this list of the gala’s worst looks over the years, including one worn by Miss Anna herself.
