Netflix Doing Series About The Royals

Netflix, which has given us such compelling binge-fests as “House of Cards” and “Orange is the New Black,” is preparing many new series, but the latest has my attention: “The Crown.” It will be based on the recent London play, “The Audience,” in which Her Majesty (Helen Mirren, reprising her Oscar-winning role in “The Queen”) meets with her Prime Ministers. As with “The Audience” (which now will probably never come to Broadway), “The Crown” will be written by Peter Morgan and directed by Stephen Daldry. No word which actors have committed to the new series, although three performers will be Queen Elizabeth at various points in her 60-year-reign. I realize that Miss Mirren is Her Majesty’s representative on earth, but I confess to tiring of seeing her in the part. Prunella Scales, who did Madge in “A Question of Attribution,” was nearer to the real deal, but sadly Miss Scales now has Alzheimer’s. See her peerless performance below.
