What a surprise! After Met Opera general manager Peter Gelb emerged from a bruising labor battle with union concessions, the Met’s board backs him more than ever. Of course they do. Rich people, and top execs like Gelb, never have to worry about where their next mortgage payment is coming from. They live in a Brunnhilde-size bubble. Met board president Kevin Kennedy tells the Wall Street Journal: “The recent negotiations have only strengthened the board’s confidence in Peter Gelb’s leadership.” “His vision is viable,” said Adrienne Arsht, a donor and former Met board member. “He is not deterred by a hiccup.” In other words, let labor eat cake!
