“Sweeney” Airs Tonight On PBS: Emma!

The New York Philharmonic‘s recent staged production of Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler’s “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” is telecast nationally on “Live From Lincoln Center” on PBS stations tonight, Sept. 26, from 9 PM-11:30 PM ET. I saw the show live last March and was impressed by Emma Thompson‘s singing of Mrs. Lovett; God knows if much of it will translate to TV, as most live performances come across as unnatural on tape. Tony winner Audra McDonald, who plays the Beggar Woman, also serves as host of the broadcast, which launches “Live from Lincoln Center’s 40th anniversary season.” The acclaimed, sold-out production co-starred bass-baritone Bryn Terfel in the title role.
