Photographer Captures Detroit’s Mood

Motor Town may be bankrupt and struggling for a new sense of purpose, but its soul will also be in its community spirit and diversity. The Dutch photographer Corine Vermeulen’s new exhibition showcases some of the characters that give the Michigan city what The Guardian calls “hope for a brighter future.” The portraits will go on display from 14 November in “Photos of the Detroit Walk-In Portrait Studio” at the Detroit Institute of Arts – the photographer’s first solo museum show. Pictured are Megdi and Iyana, captured at a Trayvon Martin Rally, in 2013.
