Your Weekend: A Selective Guide

Movies: “A Most Violent Year” earned heaps of critical praise, some folks even tendering a “Godfather” comparison. I’m not sure I’d go that far. Television: I’m still recovering from my binge on “The Wire” this past week, so I’m seeking lighter fare: Billy Joel getting the Gershwin Prize on Friday on PBS and “Galavant” (a fairy tale musical comedy) and a new “Good Wife” on Sunday. Music: “Into the Woods” is not only a top-of-the-charts movie; it’s a top-of-the-charts soundtrack. Books: Richard McGuire’s graphic novel “Here” is highly inventive. Sports: The NFL playoffs start this weekend. I say: Anyone But The Patriots. As for the college playoffs, the moral is: The North Rises Again! Finally: Much as I tire of the cold, I’ve gotten to like the after-party calm of January.
