Your Weekend: A Selective Guide

Movies: I’ll see any movie directed by Michael Mann, and any movie starring Chris Hemsworth, so I guess I’m going to have to surrender ready money for “Blackhat.” If you’re into the bear subculture, or need something for the kids, there’s “Paddington.” Buoyed by Oscar noms, “American Sniper” will top the box office. Television: PBS is broadcasting the Met’s new production of “Le Nozze di Figaro” on Friday. On Sunday, Masterpiece Mystery starts up “Grantchester” and HBO drones on with “Looking” and “Girls.” Thank goodness for “The Good Wife.” Music: I’m getting tired of all the Fall Out Boy singles on the charts. Bring back Taylor Swift! To maintain my sanity, I’m listening to Lena Horne and Jo Stafford. Books: Finally read Atul Gawande’s “Being Mortal,” in which he writes that most Americans end our days suffering unduly in hospitals. And people wonder why I think suicide is so rational! Sports: I keep trying to watch figure skating. But there are no great stars currently in skating, so why bother? Finally: Last week, I said that it was Martin Luther King weekend. Wrong! It’s this weekend. Celebrate by seeing “Selma.”
