Lowering The Tone: All-Female Choirs

All-male choirs are so yesterday! Laura Battle tells us how an all-female Vivaldi choir is raising the profile of women with deep singing voices. Battle writes about the Oxford-based Schola Pietatis Antonio Vivaldi (SPAV), founded and led by Richard Vendome. Contralto voices have rarely been in fashion, excepting one small corner of musical history: Vivaldi’s work during the early 18th century for the all-female choir at the Ospendale della Pieta in Venice.
