Disney To Make New “Mary Poppins”

The good news is that it will be directed by Rob Marshall, who did so well with “Chicago” and “Into the Woods.” Also lovely: the new songs will be by the “Hairspray” team, the delightful Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman. The story will be set about 20 years after the original “Mary Poppins” movie — you know, the one starring Julie Andrews. Which means around 1930, an odd moment: the economic downturn has begun. What has happened to the Banks family in the interim?
