George Bernard Shaw Goes Hollywood

There had been plenty of movie adaptations of the work of Shaw before “The Devil’s Disciple,” in 1959, got the Hollywood treatment. But the new edition of the movie, with its cuckoo cover art, reaches a whole new level of idiotic. Lancaster, Douglas, Olivier: oh, my! “The Devil’s Disciple,” by the way, is Shaw’s 1897 play about the Revolutionary War. It is rarely revived, for very good reason: not one of his very best.
