“Steve”: My FT Review

The Financial Times has posted my review of a new off-Broadway play. Bottom line: ‘”If a thing moves, it lives,” choreographer Twyla Tharp once said. The statement is cited by a young dancer in Mark Gerrard’s new play, “Steve,” and it applies aptly to the evening itself. For the most part, Steve canters along nicely, throwing off amusing one-liners and entertaining its audience with snippets of show tunes sung by the cast. Eventually, however, the playwright ends up stuck in a narrative rut, and resorts to muddy dialogue about mortality and the importance of friendship.’
