“China Doll”: My FT Review

The Financial Times has published my review. Bottom line: ‘Javier Bardem once said: “I don’t believe in God, I believe in Al Pacino.” For years, Broadway audiences have shown similar blind faith in the actor, a slavishness that supposedly had been called into question by “China Doll,” the new play by David Mamet. Early press reports had patrons walking out in droves at the interval. Had Mamet, who has explored the twin themes of betrayal and the con game as well as any contemporary playwright, played one trick too many on his audience?’
