Your Weekend: A Selective Guide

Movies: “The Huntsman: Winter’s War” is for the spectacle-starved. “Elvis & Nixon” would be my choice. Television: This weekend is all about “Game of Thrones” and “Silicon Valley” and “Veep.” Music: Joe Bonamassa is one of those PBS-fundraising favorites (like Josh Groban and Jackie Evancho) who have a lot more fans than you might imagine. Bonamassa’s new CD is “Blues of Desperation.” Books: Two of this week’s Pulitzer winners are worth your attention: “Custer’s Trials,” by T. J. Stiles, and “Barbarian Days: A Surfing Life,” by William Finnegan. Sports: Sometimes, I think that the Eurovision song contest should be considered an athletic event. Finally: “Love is like war: easy to begin but very hard to stop.” H.L. Mencken
