Even David Bowie Was A Fan

I’ve seen the new movie “Florence Foster Jenkins,” starring Meryl Streep, and I can tell you that it’s entertaining though a bit too sentimental and slight. It’s not in the league of the director Stephen Frears’ other, superb movies about old dames — “The Queen” and “Philomena.” But “FFJ” does give us a chance to revisit the wacky tale of the woman who made her Carnegie Hall debut at 76. Her record “The Glory of the Human Voice” was a favorite of Bowie and many others. Not only for its camp value. As Tom Service explains, it takes talent to be so bad.
