Oscar Noms: 14 For “La La,” Mel But No Amy

Oscar nominations were announced Tuesday morning. “La La Land” leads with 14 noms, tying the record previously set by “All About Eve” and “Titanic.” “La La” won’t win more than 11, because it has a double “Best Song” nom, won’t win Best Actor, and probably won’t win Best Screenplay. Amy Adams, of “Arrival,” is perhaps the biggest surprise, because the movie got Best Picture and Best Director noms. But at least Amy won’t have the unwanted distinction of losing six times without a win, which would have tied her with Deborah Kerr. The most disgusting nom was for Best Director — Mel Gibson, for “Hacksaw Ridge.” Ruth Negga, for “Loving,” was a bit of a surprise, but at least it means there’s a woman of color in the Best Actress category. This year had plenty of non-white nominees, a far cry from last year’s Oscars So White.
