“Angels In America” Soars On Strong Reviews

Tony Kushner’s mothership has landed back at London’s National Theatre, where it had an influential production, directed by Declan Donnellan, 25 years ago. This time, the protean Marianne Elliott is at the helm. Andrew Garfield is Pryor, Russell Tovey is Joe Pitt, and Nathan Lane is that Donald Trump mentor Roy Cohn. The reviews are strong. The Telegraph says the production is ‘dazzling, quirky and often downright bizarre.’ The Guardian says: ‘This eight-hour fantasia is revealed as both a document of the Aids crisis and an enduringly relevant commentary on US politics.’ Relevant not only because of Cohn/Trump but because it focuses in part on a health-care crisis — which is what the US will have if Trumpcare prevails.
