Your Weekend: A Selective Guide

Movies: Generally, I’m up for anything starring Idris Elba, but “The Dark Tower” looks lame. Nobody I know loves “Detroit” but plenty of people find it compelling. TV/Streaming: I finally watched an episode of “Beat Shazam” — oh boy oh boy oh boy. Love John Cena, and the finale of his “American Grit” happens on Sunday. Music: During the past week, I listened to every cut on Pitchfork’s “The 200 Best Songs of the 1970s.” My favorite discovery: Isaac Hayes’s 11-minute version of “The Look of Love.” Books: Andrew Sean Greer’s new novel, “Less,” is most definitely more. Delightful and a must-read for late summer — and it’s short! Sports: Los Angeles will host the Summer Olympics in 2028: will there even be a Planet Earth by 2028? Finally: The catchphrase of the 21st century thus far: “It is what it is.”
