Why Colbert Loves “Favorite Song”

In a new video for Rolling Stone, Stephen Colbert talks about his love of Chance the Rapper and Childish Gambino’s “Favorite Song,” from 2013’s Acid Rap. “I just want to talk about one verse of the song that really has three very distinctive rhythmic sections to it,” Colbert says, before comparing the rhythm to both Gilbert & Sullivan and J.R.R. Tolkien. “That rhythm right there, that was just like a worm in my brain,” he says, leading to an extremely detailed description of The Lord of the Rings. Earlier this year, Donald Glover gave a surprise performance during one of Chance’s Open Mike Chicago events. In 2017, Chance said a collaborative mixtape from the two artists would “probably” happen.
