Your Weekend: A Selective Guide
Movies: If you can’t afford a live performance, try “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms.” Streaming/TV: “The Favourite” is a new, well-reviewed movie — the same director’s “The Lobster” shows up this weekend on Netflix. Sunday nights on PBS used to be reliable — now it’s fundraising doo-wop and “Downton Abbey” all the time. Music: I love that the new album by a weird looking dude like John Prine is out-selling the new album by Botox boy Michael Buble. Books: I highly recommend Hilary Spurling’s new biography of the 20th-century English novelist Anthony Powell. Sports: The NFL just let another wife beater back into the fold — another reason to stop watching American pro football. Finally: It’s December — and I haven’t killed someone over anything Christmas-related yet. Hooray!
