Your Weekend: A Selective Guide

Movies: What a weekend at the cinema: “Ad Astra” with Brad Pitt, the Roy Cohn documentary, and the “Downton Abbey” movie. TV/Streaming: I’ve been watching a bit of HBO’s “Our Boys,” about three missing children in Israel: very powerful, though I have to admit that I don’t like reading subtitles on a home-sized screen. Music: I usually don’t listen to Verdi’s “Macbeth” until Halloween, and then with Callas, but I’m listening earlier this year, perhaps because the opera will soon be at the Met, with or without Placido Domingo. Books: I’ve read Benjamin Moser’s new biography of Susan Sontag and I have to say I’m disappointed: Moser did lots of admirable research but captures very little of the intellectual excitement and deep learning that Sontag had. Sports: I’ve barely watched an NFL game this season — still happily watching English and European football all weekend. Finally: September light is so beautiful, isn’t it?
