What Jessye Norman Told Me

I once sat next to her at a dinner. The USA had just invaded Iraq. I asked her what she thought of George W Bush. She could barely suppress her anger. “He is a small person with a small soul,” she replied. “And I don’t like small people.” In voice and talent and stature and bearing, Miss Norman was not small. RIP.
