Your Weekend: A Selective Guide

Movies: The Criterion Channel has been one of my lifelines — streaming masterpieces and near-masterpieces from the history of cinema…TCM has also been a lifesaver, and their live-streaming ensures you don’t need a cable-TV account to enjoy. TV/Streaming: Netflix’s “Becoming,” based on Michelle Obama’s inspiring memoir, will buoy your mood. But it doesn’t go very deep… Damien Chazelle’s new Netflix series, “The Eddy,” is set in Paris’s jazz scene. Music: I gave Drake’s latest collection a listen: if I smoked weed it would be great background noise. I don’t smoke weed so the tunes were pretty meh. Books: Doing some comfort reading of favorite old detective stories made me wonder once again: why are most of the greatest British mystery writers — Agatha Christie, Ngaio Marsh, Dorothy Sayers, P.D. James, Ruth Rendell, Ann Cleeves — female? Sports: Nothing to report except Korean baseball — which alas airs at 1 a.m. EST. Finally: It’s May it’s May — but it doesn’t feel very lusty.
