Tony Awards: Quick Thoughts

I didn’t watch the Tonys in real time. I fast-forwarded through them this morning. I don’t have any quibbles with the winners, other than wondering why best director awards almost always go to white people who already have Tonys. I wish they had included Joan Copeland in the memorial sequence. My biggest beef is with the inadequate treatment of Sondheim. Here’s the most important Broadway creative personality of the past 50 years and all he gets in specific tribute is Bernadette Peters — I like her but she was not in good voice — singing. This was a missed opportunity to assemble performers young and old who would have been thrilled to sing songs by the Master.
