“It’s like casting a porno movie, having people sing. They feel they’re being asked to take their clothes off.” That was said by Tim Burton, speaking of Johnny Depp and others who star in the upcoming “Sweeney Todd” movie.
I found this quote in today’s Liz Smith column, which contains a huge, howling factual error. Of “Sweeney”‘s main female role La Liz says that Patti LuPone “revitalized Mrs. Lovett for the ‘Encores’ stage and will soon bring her back to Broadway.” Smith, of course, should have said “Rose” and “Gypsy.” Ethel Merman must be rolling over in her sepulchre.
