“Mockingbird” Tops Fiction List

In a large online poll, “To Kill a Mockingbird” has been named the Number One Favorite Novel of All Time. This is wonderful news, and almost (almost!) makes me forget that the book’s author, Harper Lee, went to the Bush White House last November (see photo) to pick up a Presidential Medal of Freedom. The idea of our President doling out anything having to do with freedom — and the idea of the author of a masterpiece about racial prejudice receiving a freedom medal from Bush — was just too painfully ironic for words.
