Del Toro Goes Back to “Hellboy”

Guillermo del Toro’s “Pan’s Labyrinth,” released a couple of years ago, left me utterly bored, so much so that when it was praised to the skies I started to think that maybe I hadn’t seen the movie that everyone else was calling a masterpiece. Well, I’ve just seen del Toro’s sequel to his “Hellboy” movie — this one’s called “Hellboy II: The Golden Army,” starring Selma Blair and Ron Perlman, pictured — and at the risk of saying goodbye to my social life I have to say that it’s the hippest movie of the summer. The new flick has the same Catholic-artist visual ornateness of its predecessor, but it’s less weighed down the imagery. The story — Hellboy’s girlfriend gets pregnant and he has to grow up — has its share of preposterous action, but it’s so cool that I didn’t mind the lapses. And, as the girlfriend, Blair contributes another portrait to her wacky women gallery.
