Betty: Big Ratings, But Was She Good?

Betty White made it back to live television last night, on “SNL.” She got big ratings, but how’d she do? Just fine, thanks: charming, game for anything, a real pro. But did the show’s writers have to make her the potty-mouthed granny in almost every skit? Couldn’t we have seen a little of the smooth sophistication that has distinguished Miss Betty during seven decades on television? My favorite bit: Betty bringing her “muffins” to the radio show hosted by Ana Gasteyer and Molly Shannon (it was great to see all the SNL women return last night; the show has reverted to its boys-club status this season, with Kristen Wiig the exception that proves the rules).
